Five Most Effective Ways To Get Over Writers Block

by ImBizJourney

In my previous post I wrote about the five common reasons for writers block. In this post I am going talk about how bloggers can get over the writers block…

Like I said in my previous post, if you are tired and overworked and hence experiencing writers block, then you just need a break from your blog – Get away from your blog for a couple of days or weeks and then you will come back crying to your blog – I promise (:-)

what are the five most effective ways to get over writers block If the reasons for your writers block is something more deeper than just tiredness, then here are five effective ways to get over your writers block:

1. The Right Niche: For your primary blog, pick a niche that is close to your heart. If you don’t really have any passion for your niche, it will become obvious to your readers (through your writing). Blogging is hard work – You have to blog regularly – After the initial enthusiasm fades, after the initial set of ideas are all written about, you need passion to continue your drive. Passion will only come if the topic is close to your heart.

2. Say ‘No’ To Multiple Projects: Some people have around 20 or more projects at any given time – This is not good. Notice any premium blogger, they all just have one or two or at the most 5 projects at any given time. This way they can stay focused and are never juggling too many things at any given time. Juggling too many things kills your creativity. Too many projects will lead to writers block – trust me – I have been there.

3. Monetize Your Project: Make sure you make money – monetize your blog. From the start think of how you plan to make money. On my website I make money through affiliate marketing. I might put some adsense in the future – not sure for now.

4. It is Not Always Writers Block: Sometimes you have the ideas, you have the enthusiasm but you are not writing -This is not writers block. You assume that you are not a good writer and hence will avoid writing. See, I have never considered myself to be a writer as well. I still don’t think I am a great writer or anything close to that. I stayed away from blogging for many months – I was itching to say so many things but I stayed away. I finally took the leap and I now love it.

Like many things writing is all about practice. Just Write – Don’t keep correcting yourself – Finish your complete draft and then go and correct – And one more thing, writing on blogs is different from writing books – On blogs the tone is conversational. So just pretend you talking to someone and start typing the conversation you are having.

The key is to write something everyday – This is the most effective way to get over this so called ‘writers block’.

5. Lack of Ideas: Again, this is not really writers block but if you have no new ideas and don’t know what to write about, the words will not come and you will label it ‘writers block’. The best way to get over this writers block is to have ton of ideas – at all times. Let me tell you how you can have tons of ideas – Here is how to do it:

  • Don’t come to your computer to blog and then start thinking for an idea – Have ideas even before you come to the computer otherwise you will end up frustrated.
  • Have an idea journal – I don’t have a physical journal as such but I have a post in draft mode on this blog – And I have yellow stickies next to my laptop – Whenever I get an idea for a new post, I just write the idea down (in not more than three to four words). Sometimes I just write it on my yellow sticky or in the notes section of my mobile phone. When I have time, I copy all these ideas to the draft post on the blog – This post is titled ‘ideas’ (:-).

At the beginning of month when I am planning for the month ahead, I sit with my notebook and write down how many posts I want to write for the blog and then will write down what each of these posts will be about. At this stage, I look into the ‘ideas’ post for some ideas.

You can take some simple steps to get over writers block. Most often the cure is simpler than you think – ‘Action’ is the keyword here.

Have you ever had writers block – how did you get over yours ?
