One Mentor or Many Mentors ?
When I first started in the Internet Marketing industry, I was so impressed with the huge amount of resources and knowledge available – With my previous business, I had to put all the pieces together but in this business, the gurus seem to be more than willing to share their secrets. All they asked in return was my email address.
Most of these Internet Marketing Gurus had pictures of flashy cars and huge bungalows on their websites – and they all seemed to have started from the bottom and today after having made it, they were willing to share their knowledge.
Without a second thought I signed up to their lists and they sent me emails with the information. The first few months I was signing up every list I came across – I subscribed to all their blogs - after all, the more information I have the better it is, right?

Very soon I had huge amount of email coming into my inbox – I felt good – I was busy – Busy reading and learning. |
Most of the emails were also trying to sell some new course or the other – Luckily, I have always been a bit frugal when it comes to spending – and so I didn’t go out and buy any of the courses that were recommended – Though I was not going to spend any money, I still allowed the emails to clutter my inbox – because I felt it was essential to keep in touch with all that was happening in the industry.
I assured myself that once I have all the knowledge I need, I will get cracking on the making money part. And one more thing – I was not only reading all the emails and newsletters I could lay hands on, I was also signing up and listening to free webinars – I mean, they are free, right – So, why should I miss out on them – I am not planning to spend any money on the course they are recommending, but I might learn a thing or two for free.
Four to five months down the line, I was making no money – But I knew so much about Internet marketing – I almost called myself an expert.
I was working long hours – The hours I spent working was in no way proportional to what I was earning.
I did not know what I was doing. I was searching for the magic ingredient everywhere. I was passionate, I was working hard but I was not making the huge amounts of money that these gurus were making. I was missing something – just was not sure what it was.
It took me around 15 months to find this magic ingredient. It was always right there in front of me but I failed to see it. It was the ingredient that so many gurus spoke off but it still failed to register in my mind.
The magic ingredient was ‘Focus’. Focus, in every aspect of my business – from my email subscriptions, to newsletter subscriptions, to whom I am listening to, what I am reading to what sites I am creating. Everything I do has to take me closer to my goal not away from it.
Once I discovered the magic ingredient, I was ready to make changes…
I realized that I already know enough about Internet Marketing – I don’t need to know more to make my millions – Along my business journey, if I need to learn more, I will learn then – I will not waste my time now learning every method that was ever created.
Listening to too many gurus only leads to confusion. Everyone advocates a different method and a different approach. These multiple methods were not only cluttering my inbox, they were also cluttering up my mind.
I thought I was full of information but the bottom line is that I was full of unnecessary information.
It was then that I decided that I only needed one mentor – someone I am aspiring to become like, someone who really talks to me – someone who resonates with me more than any other experts.
And this person for me is Lynn Terry. She is someone who has created a successful business from the scratch – someone who is always willing to share all her secrets.
She does not claim to be Miss Perfect – she has her own insecurities but still keeps on moving and making progress. She seemed to be more human than any of the experts I was listening to.
One of the best investments I ever made was to sign up for her membership site. She has a free membership and an elite membership. I started with the free one and then when I was convinced that this was the place for me, I signed up for elite membership.
I am not active member on her site – I haven’t made a post there for almost a year but I read most of the posts there – I listen to each and every webinar of hers (many time – more than I can keep count of).
She is the only person I follow – I have unsubscribed to all the other lists – Previously, my mind was always buzzing with a new idea every second. Now, I am much more focused and steady. I know where I want to be in 5 years and I am working to get there. I know what I know now is more than enough to get me to the finishing line – having said that, if I need to learn more, I will do it when the need arises and not now.
Sticking to just one mentor has made a huge difference to my business. In school, there was a reason why we only had one teacher for a subject and not hundreds of teachers.
I also suggest that you pick one mentor – someone whose lifestyle (business and personal) resonates with the lifestyle you are after. Don’t go all over the place. Too many ideas and too many suggestions are all too distracting.
Best,

P.S: Lynn posts hosts free webinars and you can sign for these webinars to listen – listen to one and you will realize why she is the real deal.
