Julie and Julia

by ImBizJourney

Two days ago I watched the movie ‘Julie and Julia’. This movie has been on my ‘movies to watch’ list for sometime now – And finally, two days ago, I sat down with a cup of coffee in my hand and was all set to watch Julie and Julia – I was excited and curious to find out what the movie was all about.

I had heard a lot about this movie from fellow bloggers – most of them loved it – Most of them had heaps of praises for the movie – I was a little afraid because I was worried that the movie might not stand up to the expectations. I really wanted the movie to be good because it not often that you get to see a movie about a blog and a blogger (in fact this was my first).

The movie, ‘Julie and Julia’ exceeded my expectations. I absolutely loved it and came out all ‘inspired’ and ‘happy’. Happy because it is a feel good movie – and a true story (bonus points).

Julie and Julia are two women who live in two different time periods. Meryl Streep plays the part of Julia Child, the French Cook, the cook who introduced French Cooking to the Americans through her cookbook and television shows. Amy Adams plays the part of Julie, a blogger who cooks all the 524 recipes from Julia’s cookbook and blogs her cooking experiences.

Julie is bored with her day job – all her friends seem to be doing well, whilst she is still stuck in a call centre job that she absolutely hates. She desperately wants to turn her life around but is not sure how to do it.

Julie loves to cook. And every evening, despite her tough day at work, she comes back home and cooks a good, tasty meal for dinner. Cooking is her favorite pass time.

One day her husband suggests that she should combine her passion for writing and her passion for cooking into a cooking blog. She loves the idea.

Julie decides to cook all the 524 recipes in Julia Child’s cookbook and share her cooking experiences in her new blog. She takes this new challenge quite seriously because previously she has never completed any project till the end and this time around she wants things to be different.

Julie starts on her blogging mission and despite all the odds and difficulties along the way, she reaches the finish line on this project. And slowly her blog attracts a huge number of followers. Her blog’s success soon attracts media attention, and then her story turns into a book and from there on into a movie.

I have been talking only about Julie and have completely neglected Julia’s role in the movie. Actually there are two stories running in parallel in the movie – one is of Julie’s and the other of Julia’s. Julia’s side of the movie is about how she turns her recipes into a cooking book – Like Julie, Julia also faces a lot of obstacles but she does not give up – She keeps trying and trying and eventually gets her book published. The book is a huge success.

To become a successful blogger you need to be consistent and persistent with your blogging. Julie is an execellent example of this. She is determined and focussed – she blogs almost every single day and then eventually success comes her way. It took time but Julie was persistent with her efforts. And in the end it all pays off. The same can be said for Julia as well. I apologise if I am focusing more on Julie alone but since I am blogger, Julie’s story spoke to me more than Julia’s.

At this stage I am not as persistent and consistent with my efforts as Julie. And that is one of the reasons why I walked out so inspired from this movie. I saw first hand how consistency can bring success.

The movie, Julie and Julia will definitely also increase the exposure to blogs – more people will want to find out about blogs and in the process more blogs will be created – all good news for the industry.

Loved ‘Julie and Julia’ and wouldn’t mind watching it a second or third time….

Best,
